Tasting note Arjolle fume rouge
Bright red in color, youthful fruity in scent with nuances of cherries and slightly burnt notes. The taste structure is round and soft in action and develops a balanced finish with herbs and fruit.
After the successful introduction of the popular Fumé Blanc, our favorite Languedoc domain Arjolle is now also making a red variant. Like its white brother, the Fumé Rouge is inspired by the famous Loire winemaker Joël André. He convinced Louis Marie Teisserenc in the 1980s to also plant cabernet franc, the red grape from famous Loire regions such as Bourgeuil and Chinon.
At the time, this happened on the nearly two-hectare plots of Les Granges and Les Bourdic, both with strongly calcareous, relatively cool soil. A good choice, because this terroir is ideal for making fine red wines from the Cabernet Franc grape. Arjolle lets the grapes ripen slowly and only harvests in early October. This ensures elegance, maturity and a beautiful fruit expression in the final wine.
Cold soaking and fermentation in concrete cuves follows immediately after harvesting. The end result is an intensely fruity, mild Cabernet Franc, which is more accessible than many red Loire thanks to the warm climate. A successful experiment!
Great with poultry or lightly spiced dishes from the oven.
