Planting grapes and turning them into wine, that's what Uncle Pollie started with. Or was it Uncle Flippie? How exactly the wine company Cederberg Private Cellar came into existence at the fruit growing company Dwarsrivier in the South African Cape somewhere in the 1960s, leaves the current owner and winemaker David Nieuwoudt in the middle. In any case, he took over the work in 1997 and Cederberg grew into what it is today: a famous wine estate with 50 hectares of vineyards at the foot of the more than 2000 meters high Sneeuberg, surrounded by wonderful nature.
The area where the winery is located is also called Cederberg. It can be found on the west coast of South Africa, about 250 kilometers above Cape Town. A rugged, mountainous wine region, with a climate that David describes as 'cool Mediterranean'. The vineyards are high: between 950 and 1100 meters above sea level. This means that the grapes of Cederberg literally stand out above all other grapes of the Western Cape.
The soil is very varied. "A positive disaster," jokes David. It is a lot of puzzle to get each grape variety in the right place, but the reward is also there: beautiful wines that show their unique origin. Thanks to Uncle Pollie and Uncle Flippie.
