The island of Sardinia is located about halfway between Italy and Spain, directly below Corsica. It has - as should be done on an island - idiosyncratic residents, who quietly go their own way. One of those residents is winemaker Giuseppe Gabbas. His company is located close to the town of Nuoro in the northern half of Sardinia, in a beautiful valley at the foot of the rugged Supramonte mountain range.
Here Gabbas - according to those who know him a man of few words who prefers to talk rather than talk - cultivates 20 hectares of vineyards. They are located at an altitude of 250 to 350 meters and have granite bottoms. A place with an ideal climate for the grape of Sardinia: the blue cannonau. The heat and drought are tempered by the proximity of the sea, which is 20 kilometers away, and the mountains. Together they ensure sufficient cooling and, above all, a significant difference in day and night temperatures. This promotes the development of acids and aromas in the grapes, and makes it possible to make elegant wines.
Refined wines are Gabbas's trademark. However, he also finds it important to follow the Sardinian winemaking tradition, in which the grape skins soak for a long time in the juice. That makes his wines elegant as well as full, earthy and hearty.
