Sauvignon at its best!
Refined and complex aroma with citrus, white fruit and a mineral spiciness. The taste is fresh and powerful and aromatically persists for a long time.
Sancerre Blanc from the Loire Valley
At Domaine Lucien Crochet, they have absolutely everything to make sublime Sancerre. Not only is the Crochet one of the historic winegrowing families in this famous wine region, it also boasts the ultimate terroir for Sauvignon Blanc.
The domain is located in Bué, one of the celebrated communes of Sancerre. Gilles Crochet, together with his wife Laurence, took over the baton from his father Lucien. Together they cultivate 35 hectares of vineyards according to the principle of the lutte raisonnée, so reasoned viticulture without the use of herbicides and insecticides.
The sauvignon grapes for this Les Calcaires come from various plots of the winery, all characterized by the so typical lime soils (caillottes and griottes). Gilles harvests the trusses by hand and then carefully presses them. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and to a small extent in oak barrels.
The end result is an impressive style of Sancerre: super expressive in aroma, ripe and broad in taste, but at the same time salty, focused and terroir driven. Les Calcaires is perfect as a luxury aperitif, with fish or with young goat cheese. Gilles and Laurence's tip: combine it with the local Crottin de Chavignol. Success guaranteed!
Decanter - June 2020: 95/100 points | Outstanding | Brilliant energy and aromatics
Brilliant energy and aromatics here, massive focus and grip, acid precision too. A young wine set up for the cellar.
Jancis Robinson - April 2019: 16/20 points | The riper style of Sancerre
Chalk, stem, flint and ripe lemon fruit. The riper style of Sancerre, but still with that flinty minerality.
