Tasting note Gross Jakobi
Fragrant dry white wine with nuances of ripe apple and peach in the aroma and mild citrus notes. The juicy, fresh flavor structure is balanced and ends with a persistent finish.
There are quite a few different white (and even some red) grapes planted in the Austrian Südsteiermark region. However, Sauvignon Blanc is by far the most important representative of the region. This classic example is made by the Gross family, one of the pioneers of the area.
Jakobi is not only a very beautiful wine, he also has a very beautiful story. He takes his name from Jakobitag, a holiday dedicated to James, patron of the weather. An old farmer's calendar (Mandl calendar) is depicted on the label. It used to predict the weather, the moon phases and name days. This, on the other hand, describes how the harvest year for the relevant year has been.
To give the Jakobi its pure, aromatic character, the wine is fermented exclusively in stainless steel tanks. The wine then ripens briefly on the yeasts. It gives a typical Sauvignon Blanc, with a typical Styrian character: pure, refined, with lively fresh acids and a little spiciness. It makes it a delicious aperitif wine, or a good accompaniment to salads or smoked fish, for example.
