Description

The majority of the Dr. Wehrheim family winery's production is white wine. But since the estate specializes in Burgunder varieties, Spätburgunder is a must for red wines. Franz, the current winemaker and fourth generation, is making Spätburgunder his challenge.

And you can taste it immediately in this fine, ripe, and accessible "Gutswein," the winery's entry-level wine. The grapes are planted in the estate's own vineyards, and the soil consists predominantly of Bundsandstein. This type of sandstone is common in the Palatinate and is particularly well-suited for Spätburgunder.

After hand-picking, Franz destems and ferments the grapes. He then presses them and ages the wine for ten months in used barriques. This preserves the subtle wood influence.

This results in a delicious, juicy, fruity, and smooth Spätburgunder. Enjoy it on its own, with a spicy hard sausage platter, or with grilled meat or poultry. For optimal enjoyment, serve the wine slightly chilled.
