Bodegas Piqueras

Bodegas Piqueras in Almansa in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha is a real family business. A company that has gradually been built into a thriving domain with a lot of hard work and love for the region.

The bodega was founded in 1915 by the Piqueras family and is now run by oenologist Juan Pablo Bonete Piqueras and his brother Angel. Their father Mario gave the company a huge boost by making his own wine in the 1960s instead of selling his grapes. He was also the driving force behind the foundation of the DO Almansa in 1975. Sons Juan Pablo and Angel in turn provided new dynamics and developed the bodega into a company of our time. They built a new wine cellar, switched to organic grape cultivation and introduced modern winemaking techniques.

In 2017, Juan Pablo Cantos Serrano joined the Piqueras team. This Almansa-born winemaker has built a truly impressive resume within and outside Spain before returning to his native soil to make wines for Piqueras. After his studies in biology and oenology, he gained experience with big names such as Ribeira del Duero domain Vega Sicilia, Bodegas Barahonda in Yecla and Villa Maria Estate in New Zealand. Now he wants nothing more than to show the world the potential of his Almansa region side by side with Juan Pablo Bonete.

The Almansa wine region

Almansa is located on the eastern edge of Castilla-La Mancha, the inhospitable plateau in the heart of Spain, about 100 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. Traditionally, tough indigenous grapes such as monastrell and garnacha tintorera are grown here. These are also the varieties that the Bonete brothers grow on their 190 hectares, supplemented with tempranillo and syrah. The wines from this region are sometimes a bit very powerful, Bodegas Piqueras makes them wonderfully sultry, seductive and drinkable.
