Description

The owner of Tenuta delle Terre Nere, Marco de Grazia, is one of the pioneers of modern wine culture on the Etna volcano. Although he himself is not from Sicily, but from Florence, he was one of the first to see the potential of this special terroir and microclimate and to breathe new life into the dormant wine culture. He is now one of the volcano's most renowned producers.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere (referring to the black, volcanic soil) is located on the north side of Etna, near the village of Randazzo, right in the historic heart of the wine region. The domain has approximately thirty hectares of vineyards with predominantly old vines (50-100 years). Some of these vineyards are located in so-called contrade: unique crus that produce wines with their own, recognizable identity and can therefore also be mentioned on the label of the wine.

After Feudo di Mezzo, Calderara Sottana, Santo Spirito and Guardiola, San Lorenzo is the latest contrada that Terre Nere has added to its area. The vineyard covers approximately 4 hectares, is planted with more than 70 year old vines of nerello mascalese and nerello cappuccio, and is located approximately 750 meters above sea level. What is special about San Lorenzo is the rare Ellittico terroir. This volcanic layer, which was formed between 60,000 and 15,000 years ago, can only be found in its pure form in Calderara Sottana and San Lorenzo. It is therefore not without reason that Marco considers these two wines as his Grand Crus.

The San Lorenzo consists predominantly of nerello mascalese, supplemented with a small percentage of nerello cappuccio. After fermentation, the wine matures for about 16 to 18 months in French oak of various sizes. This produces a complex, structured wine, which is especially suitable for heavier meals and will develop fantastically in the bottle in the coming years.

Drink with

High quality wine, excellent with dishes with meat, fine game or with ripe cheeses.

Tasting note

Full red in color, intense in scent with beautiful aromas of candied red fruit, herbs and spices and slightly tarry nuances. The taste is round, full and powerful and develops aromatically with a fine, elegant tannin in the aftertaste.

Shelf life

Drinkable from three years after harvest, can be kept for at least ten years after harvest.
