Description
Château Tronquoy-Lalande is a magnificent 18th-century estate in the heart of Saint-Estèphe. Historically, it is considered one of the appellation's top terroirs. After a period of decline, the estate was acquired in 2006 by Martin and Olivier Bouygues, who had also acquired the world-famous and nearby Château Montrose (2nd Grand Cru Classé) a few months earlier.
Instead of incorporating Tronquoy-Lalande into Montrose, the duo decided to restore this legendary estate to its former glory. The old vineyards were renovated and replanted to their current 30 hectares. The cellar has also been completely renovated and is equipped to rival those of a Grand Cru Classé. This is deliberate, because although the estate isn't a Cru Classé of 1855, the wine is made there in the same way.
Taste this impressive Saint-Estèphe. It's made from Merlot (51%), Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Petit Verdot (3%), and Cabernet Franc (2%). The relatively high Merlot content is due to the soil, which contains gravel but also a fair amount of clay. Thanks to the low yields, the grapes are exceptionally concentrated.
Combined with the luxurious maturation in French oak barriques, this results in an impressive, powerful Left Bank Bordeaux, with silky tannins, an endless finish and enormous aging potential.
