Description
Manchuela pioneer Juan Antonio Ponce may be known for his fantastic wines made from bobal and other local grape varieties, but he also knows how to handle international syrah.
Juan Antonio harvests the grapes from a small, seventeen-year-old vineyard, with limestone and clay soil. After harvesting, he ferments the Syrah using the yeasts present on the grapes. It is then aged for eight months in French oak barrels. Finally, Juan Antonio bottles the wine without filtering or fining to preserve as much of the flavor as possible.
It produces a beautiful, pure red wine, with the typical characteristics of a good Syrah on the one hand, and the unmistakable Ponce signature on the other. El Mirador has wonderfully juicy cherry fruit, a hint of black pepper, and a subtle oaky influence.
Like all of Ponce's wonderful wines, this one impresses with its remarkable elegance for a wine from such a warm region. The Syrah is beautifully ripe, yet fresh, subtle, rich in finesse, and relatively modest in alcohol. Don't miss out, as Ponce has fewer than 3,000 bottles available.
