| From 'mister Bobal' Juan Antonio Ponce | |
| From a vineyard with old vines on granite soils | |
| Subtle and light-footed, with notes of red fruit and herbs |
Description
In recent years, Juan Antonio Ponce has become one of Spain's avant-garde winemakers. With his conscientious, natural, biodynamic approach, he has proven that exceptionally refined wines of international caliber can be made even in unfamiliar wine regions and from local grape varieties.
This Bobal, a Ponce specialty, is a prime example. Juan Antonio harvests the grapes in the high-altitude vineyard La Estrecha, which literally means "the narrow one" in reference to the narrow rows. The vines (predominantly bobal and a small percentage of other local white and black grapes) are over 75 years old and are planted on granite soil.
After harvest, Ponce ferments the grapes in whole bunches using the yeasts present on the grapes in large wooden barrels. He then ages the wine for another year in smaller French oak barrels.
Due to the soil type and the slow ripening of the grapes in the La Estrecha vineyard, this wine is distinguished by its refined and intense character. It occupies a perfect balance between La Casilla (the most light and minerally Bobal) and Pino (the most powerful and concentrated).
With its subtle notes of red fruit, herbs, flowers, and minerality, plus its modest alcohol content, this is a wonderful wine to pair with refined dishes like carpaccio or poultry. It's delicious to drink now, but can also age in the bottle for up to ten years. Highly recommended!
