Description
What a great addition to our Italian wine selection! Fiano di Avellino – made from the ancient local Fiano grape of the same name – is not only one of Italy's great white classics, but Di Meo is also considered one of the finest producers in the southern Campania wine region. Their signature? Pure wines with excitement and excellent aging potential.
The family harvests the grapes from their twenty hectares of Fiano vineyards located in Salza Irpinia, a Fiano cru within the larger, heterogeneous Avellino region. The vineyards are situated on a hillside over 500 meters above sea level and have a northeasterly exposure. These conditions ensure sufficient coolness and a significant difference between day and night temperatures.
This allows the grapes to ripen very gradually, retaining their fresh acidity and enticing aromas despite the warm southern climate. After hand-picking in October, Roberto di Meo destems the grapes and gently presses them. He then ferments the juice and ages it for three months in stainless steel tanks.
And that results in a magnificent white wine, with finesse, structure, and character. It's elegant, floral, and savory, with notes of apple, pear, and hazelnut. Thanks to its lively, fresh acidity, the Fiano not only ages exceptionally well (a few years in the bottle yields heavenly honeyed aromas and flavors), but also boasts exceptional gastronomic appeal. The Di Meo's culinary recommendation? Ravioli with ricotta and spinach, or brill en papillote.
