Seductive, full, subtle and pure with aromas of ripe cherries, blackcurrants and blackberries, a hint of mint, licorice, cedarwood, tea, thyme, rose leaf, plum and cocoa, Quinta de Vargellas can age beautifully, but can also be drunk young.
The spring of 1995 was exceptionally warm and the vines were in full bud by mid-April. In May, the blossoms were overwhelming and it became clear that, if conditions remained favourable, there would be plenty of grapes to harvest. The summer, on the other hand, was fairly cool but had very high temperatures in August. thanks to some rain on September 5 and 7, the grapes reached full ripeness. The harvest at Quinta de Vargellas started on the 13th of that month, a week later than in most other domains of other port producers in the region. The sugar content in the fruits turned out to be higher than ever before. Thanks to the cooler temperatures from the end of September, fermentation was slower than usual, achieving a high extraction of fruit flavors and color.
