Tasting note Piqueras Los Losares
Bodegas Piqueras is one of the main driving forces behind the Spanish region of Almansa and makes beautiful, authentic wines. As an ode to the region, its special terroir and old vines, winemaker Juan Pablo Cantos previously launched the Los Losares Granacha Tintorera. After the great success of this wine, he decided to introduce a second Los Losares, made from Almansa's absolute prestige grape monastrell.
Juan Pablo harvests the grapes in a single plot in Los Losares, located 900 meters above sea level. The vineyard has a stony soil and a unique microclimate. The high location provides grapes with nicely developed aromas and fresh acids. The ungrafted vines are over eighty years old, which ensures concentration and complexity in the wine.
Wanting to create a Monastrell that combines the typical power and intensity of a beautiful Almansa with finesse, Juan Pablo decided to age the wine in large oak barrels. These don't give off as much flavor; the wood aging is therefore subtle and supportive.

As far as we are concerned, Juan Pablo has succeeded tremendously in his intention. The Los Losares Monastrell is a beautiful red Almansa with ripe, sun-baked fruit. Powerful and intense in taste, but also with a refined freshness and a beautifully polished structure. Drink it in combination with, for example, lamb or red meat, or with old, hard cheeses. Or just like that, because this impressive Spanish wine is an experience in itself.
Drink at
Beautiful, oak-aged red wine that combines well with hearty (meat) dishes, such as spiced tournedos, stew with lamb and beans or spicy, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Deep red wine with a pure fragrance expression of red currant, cherry, plum, vanilla and toast. Powerful and intense in taste, but remains elegant with sun-baked fruit, a balanced freshness and polished tannins. The finish is lingering with mocha and cedar.
At its best from 3 years; shelf life up to 8 to 9 years after harvest.
