Although Raúl Pérez produces wines in various parts of Spain, including Portugal and South Africa, his name is most closely associated with the northwestern Spanish region of Bierzo. Not only was he born here, but Raúl is also one of the important pioneers who put this region's unique terroir on the international wine map.

One of Raúl's projects in his native village of Valtuille de Abajo is the unique La Vizcaína wine series, dedicated to the old crus surrounding the village. Las Gundiñas is one of them. The vines in this 2.2-hectare vineyard are over a hundred years old. The limestone and clay soils are planted with mencia, bastardo, garnacha tintorera, and doña blanca.

Raúl harvests the grapes when the individual varietals are fully ripe. Once picked, the grape bunches ferment in vats. This is followed by a fairly long maceration period of 30-60 days on the skins and a year of aging in used barrels. Finally, Raúl bottles the wine without filtering or fining, so some sediment may remain in the bottle.

Because Las Gundiñas has a relatively rich, fertile soil, this wine is usually the most accessible and fruity of the La Vizcaína wines. It has a powerful structure, while the finish is slightly earthy. A beautiful, gastronomic wine to pair with hearty meat dishes, for example.
