The Claudina Godello
A wine produced in only 1,500 bottles, from La Claudine, a single vineyard just outside Valtuille at an altitude of 500 meters. This wine is made from 100% Godello grapes and vinified in French oak barrels of varying sizes.
After manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in 225-liter oak barriques, 50% of which are new. Raul Perez does not use bâtonnage (otherwise the wine would become too rich), but does use malolactic fermentation. After aging in this oak for 24 months, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
Bodegas Raúl Pérez
Raúl Pérez is what you'd call a remarkable winemaker. Although classically trained (in oenology in Requena), his approach is anything but. Rather than following the beaten path, Raúl follows nature. He doesn't make wine, but rather allows it to express itself by observing the soil types, microclimates, and ripening times of the grapes, and by influencing the grape material as little as possible.
This unorthodox, intuitive approach yields unique, pure, and almost indescribable terroir wines, which in turn have earned Raúl absolute cult status. He is considered one of the world's most visionary winemakers, a champion of New Spain, a reformer of his native Bierzo, and the foremost winemaking consultant in northwest Spain. Decanter describes him as "the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius," and The Wine Advocate has reviewed dozens of Raúl's wines. The affable and unassuming Raúl seems unconcerned. Wine is what drives his restless, innovative spirit.
His home base is Valtuille de Abajo. It's where his family has owned Castro Ventosa since 1725, and where Raúl began his career. In 2003, he launched his first project, the iconic Ultreia series. He also produces the exclusive single-vineyard La Vizcaina series here. But one vineyard is, of course, not enough for a phenomenon like Pérez. Besides the brilliant Bierzo, Raúl also (co)creates wines in regions like Rías Baixas (with Rodrigo Méndez of Forjas del Salnés), Ribeira Sacra, Portugal (with Dirk van der Niepoort), and South Africa (with Eben Sadie). Always searching for the ultimate expression of terroir.
