La Claudina Godello

Wine with a production of only 1500 bottles, from La Claudine, a 'single vineyard' just outside Valtuille at an altitude of 500 meters. This wine is made from 100% Godello and is vinified in French oak barrels of different sizes.

After manual harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed. The fermentation takes place in oak barriques of 225 liters, of which 50% in new wood. Raul Perez does not use bâtonnage (otherwise the wine will be too fat), but he does use malolactic fermentation. After maturing in this wood for 24 months, a bottling follows without fining or filtering.

Bodegas Raúl Pérez

Raúl Pérez is what you call a striking winemaker. Although he is classically trained (oenology in Requena), his working method is anything but. Raúl prefers to follow nature rather than the beaten track. He does not make wine, but allows the wine to express itself by observing the soil types, microclimates and ripening times of the grapes and influencing the grape material as little as possible.

This unorthodox, intuitive method produces unique, pure, barely describable terroir wines, which in turn have given Raúl absolute cult status. He is seen as one of the most visionary winemakers in the world, champion of the New Spain, reformer of his native region Bierzo and the most important winemaking consultant in northwest Spain. Decanter describes him as 'the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius', The Wine Advocate reviewed dozens of Raúl's wines. The sympathetic and modest Raúl doesn't seem to care. Wine is what keeps his restless, innovative mind occupied.

Its home port is Valtuille de Abajo. This is where his family has owned Castro Ventosa since 1725 and where Raúl started his career. In 2003 he launched his first own project, the iconic Ultreia series. He also makes the exclusive single vineyard series La Vizcaina here. But one wine region is of course not enough for a phenomenon like Pérez. In addition to brilliant Bierzo, Raúl also (co)creates wines in, among others, Rías Baixas (with Rodrigo Méndez of Forjas del Salnés), Ribeira Sacra, Portugal (with Dirk van der Niepoort) and South Africa (with Eben Sadie). Always looking for the ultimate terroir expression.
