Description
A true wine revolution is underway in Spain. While Spanish wines have long been known as true powerhouses with plenty of weight, ripeness, and oak, a new generation of winemakers is focusing more on cooler vineyards, terroir expression, and elegance.
This is also the case in Priorat. While impressive, full-bodied, and high-alcohol wines in the 1990s and 2000s led to a true renaissance in the region, earning it the highest DOCa status (alongside Rioja), a more refined style is now also popular.
Take, for example, the refined wines of Mas Doix. This family-run winery's vineyards are located in the village of Poboleda, in one of the highest and coolest terroirs in the region. Thanks to the significant difference between day and night temperatures, the grapes here benefit from a long ripening season.
Founders Ramon and Valentí Llagostera and their team cultivate the steep terraced vineyards organically, incorporating elements of biodynamics. Almost everything is done by hand.
Les Crestes is considered the flagship wine. It's a blend of 80% Garnacha, 10% Cariñena, and 10% Syrah. About three-quarters of the grapes come from vineyards planted on the famous Llicorella soil, composed of brown-black slate and quartz, while the remainder comes from vineyards with calcareous clay soils.
After hand-picking, destemming, and fermentation, the wine matures in 50% used French oak barrels, 25% large vats, and 25% concrete tanks. This results in a beautiful Priorat, distinguished by its ripe fruit, suppleness, and elegance.
And the name Les Crestes? It refers to the mountain with its cock's-comb-shaped peak, at the foot of which Mas Doix de Grenache is planted.
