Description

A true wine revolution is underway in Spain. While Spanish wines were long known as real powerhouses with great weight, ripeness, and oak, a new generation of winemakers is focusing more on cooler vineyards, terroir expression, and elegance.

The same is true in Priorat. While impressive, heavy, and high-alcohol wines ensured that the region underwent a true renaissance in the 1990s and 2000s and achieved the highest DOCa status (alongside Rioja), a more refined style has since become popular.

Take, for instance, the refined wines of Mas Doix. The vineyards of this family business are located in the village of Poboleda, in one of the highest and coolest terroirs of the region. Due to the large difference between day and night temperatures, the grapes benefit from a long ripening season here.

Founders Ramon and Valentí Llagostera and their team cultivate the steep terraced vineyards organically and implement elements of biodynamics. Virtually everything is done by hand.

Les Crestes serves as the flagship wine. It is a blend of 80% Garnacha, 10% Cariñena, and 10% Syrah. About three-quarters of the grapes come from vineyards planted on the famous Llicorella soil, consisting of brownish-black slate and quartz; the remainder comes from vineyards with calcareous clay soils.

After manual harvesting, destemming, and fermentation, the wine ages in 50% used French oak barrels, 25% large vats, and 25% concrete tanks. The result is a beautiful Priorat that stands out for its ripe fruit, suppleness, and elegance.

And the name Les Crestes? That refers to the mountain with the cockscomb-shaped peak, at the foot of which Mas Doix has planted Grenache.
