Description

Ridge Vineyards is one of the icons of California wine culture. The estate owes its reputation to its exceptional quality single-vineyard Cabernet and Zinfandel. Its first and most famous wine is Monte Bello: a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard of the same name, first produced in 1962.

The Geyserville is also one of the estate's historic wines: it has been produced since 1966. The grapes come from the vineyard of the same name, where the first vines were planted in 1882. No fewer than 23 different grape varieties are grown there. Zinfandel is the most important, supplemented by grapes such as Carignan, Petite Sirah, Mataro, and Alicante Bouschet. The wine blend therefore changes every year.

To maximize the quality of the vineyards and grapes, winemaker Eric Baugher works according to the principles of "pre-industrial winemaking." By this, he refers to a non-interventionist winemaking method inspired by the nineteenth century. At Ridge, therefore, no artificially crafted, embellished industrial wines are made, but classic wines characterized by their terroir and vintage.

Ridge's wines thus distinguish themselves from many American wines through their elegance, subtlety, and complexity. This is certainly true of the Geyserville, which is round and soft thanks to the sultry ripe fruit and well-balanced oak aging, but also lively and energetic thanks to its fresh acidity. This wine is best enjoyed with food, between five and fifteen years after the vintage.
