Information

Grauburgunder (or Pinot Gris) from Rheinhessen
From the limestone-rich hills surrounding Saulheim
By Burgunder specialists Christoph and Johannes Thörle
Mineral, refined and creamy

Tasting note Thörle Rheinhessen Grauburgunder

Fragrant dry white wine with nuances of ripe yellow fruit, some anise and flowers. The taste starts fresh and juicy and ends well-balanced with a persistent aftertaste.

Description

The star of the Thörle brothers is rising. In 2006 they took over the parental wine estate, where their ancestors had been making wine since the 17th century. They focus on Riesling, Silvaner and burgunder varieties Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder and Spätburgunder, because they believe these grapes best suit the limestone-rich soils of Saulheim.

Because the brothers want to make authentic wines that reflect their origins, they pay a lot of attention to the vineyards. They keep yields low and they harvest the wines by hand so that they can select thoroughly. In the cellar the motto is 'Kontrolliertes Nichtstun'. The fermentation takes place spontaneously with wild yeasts and the wines are given plenty of time for fermentation and maturation.

The grapes for the Grauburgunder are lightly crushed after manual harvest and remain with the juice for about twelve hours. After the skin softening, a six-week fermentation follows in predominantly stainless steel tanks and a small portion of wooden barrels. Finally, the wine matures on the yeasts for another four months.

The result is a wonderfully creamy, but also fresh, salty, mineral Grauburgunder. Beautiful as an aperitif for lovers of milder wines, also delicious with light starters or soft cheeses.
