Description
Although Mount Langi Ghiran produces wines from a variety of grape varieties, shiraz is their undisputed specialty. The estate owes its reputation to Langi Shiraz. This wine has been considered one of Australia's iconic shiraz wines since it appeared out of nowhere on the cover of Wine Spectator in 1996 – alongside legends Henschke Mount Edelstone and Penfolds Grange.
The Cliff Edge is the little brother and—for about a quarter of the price—an unparalleled masterpiece. The Shiraz grapes—two different clones, to be precise—are harvested from different plots of Mount Langi's historic vineyard in the Grampians. The relatively cool climate and the poor granite soils clearly influence the wine's style, which is more reminiscent of Northern Rhône than much Australian Shiraz.
Once harvested, the grapes ferment spontaneously. After pressing, the wine matures for fourteen months in French oak barriques, about a third of which are new. The result is a superior Shiraz that effortlessly combines finesse, intensity, and suppleness.
It has enticing aromas of blackberry, plum, violet, pepper, and cedar, and is full and smooth on the palate, with a balanced freshness and a lingering finish. Think of an elegant Côte Rôtie, but from Australia. A wine not to be missed!
Drinking at
A particularly fine, oak-aged red wine that pairs well with spicy dishes. Perfect with exotically spiced (meat) dishes from the barbecue or grill, stew with beef stew, or aged, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
A deep ruby-red wine with a seductive aroma of ripe blackberry, plum, vanilla, pepper, and bay leaf. Full and smooth on the palate with jammy dark fruit, polished tannins, and a lovely freshness. The finish is long and refined with notes of cedar and spice.
Shelf life
Now beautiful and easy to keep for up to 10 years after harvest.
