Description
Bordeaux and Douro expert Christian Seely is convinced that the Douro can produce wines that deserve a place among the great wines of the world in terms of quality and aging potential. As far as he is concerned, the Douro undoubtedly belongs in the same league as Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône, and Piedmont. And he should know, for in addition to managing Quinta da Romaneira, Seely is at the helm of, among others, Château Pichon Baron in Bordeaux and that other Douro reference, Quinta do Noval.
At Quinta da Romaneira, Seely and winemaker Carlos Agrellos possess the very best terroir. Their 86 hectares of steep terraced vineyards stretch for no less than three kilometers along the majestic Douro River. Each of the vineyards is classified as Class A, the highest possible classification in the Douro.
Here, the duo harvests the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão, which together form the blend for the Dona Clara. After picking, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Once fermented, the wine ages for ten months in wooden barrels, a small proportion of which is new French oak.
The result is a beautiful, modern red Douro with pure fruit and fine oak. It is smooth and full-bodied, with notes of dark fruit, spices, cocoa, and oak. An intense, seductive wine that is delicious now and can easily be aged for another ten years.
