Bordeaux and Douro expert Christian Seely is convinced that the Douro can produce wines that deserve a place among the world's greats in terms of quality and aging potential. In his view, the Douro belongs squarely alongside Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône, and Piedmont. And he should know, because besides helming Quinta da Romaneira, Seely also helms Château Pichon Baron in Bordeaux and that other Douro benchmark, Quinta do Noval.

At Quinta da Romaneira, Seely and winemaker Carlos Agrellos have access to the very best terroir. Their 86 hectares of steeply terraced vineyards stretch for an impressive three kilometers along the majestic Douro River. Each vineyard is Class A certified, the highest possible classification in the Douro region.



Here, the duo harvests the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão, which together form the blend for Dona Clara. After harvest, the grapes ferment in stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks. Once fermented, the wine matures for ten months in wooden barrels, a small portion of which are new French oak.

The result is a beautiful, modern red Douro with pure fruit and beautiful oak. It's smooth and full-bodied, with notes of dark fruit, spice, cocoa, and oak. An intense, seductive wine that's delicious now and will easily age for another ten years.
