Description
Quinta da Romaneira is the second largest house in the Douro. The winery has no less than 412 hectares of land, which extends more than three kilometers along the meandering banks of the Douro River. Some 86 hectares are planted with historic vineyards, which are laid out in terraces on the breathtakingly steep slopes of the river.
Due to the steepness of the slopes, all vineyards are maintained and worked by hand. To make top quality wine and port, owner Christian Seely chooses to process all plots separately in the cellar, with their own unique microclimate. He also keeps yields extremely low, which ensures grapes with a lot of concentration.
This complex and refined Tawny is a blend of Ports with an average age of ten years old. It is made from touriga nacional, tinta roriz, touriga franca and tinta barroca. Once harvested, the grapes are trampled underfoot in a traditional manner. After fermentation, the wine matures in used wooden barrels of 640 liters until the wine has reached the right age to be used in the final blend.
This method produces a beautiful, elegant Tawny style, with ripening notes of dried fruit, spices and caramel. The lively freshness despite the age of the wine is striking, and the signature of the Tawnies from Romaneira. Delicious with nut and chocolate desserts or matured hard cheeses, also particularly suitable as a contemplation wine.
