Description
Villota is the promising project of the Pérez Villota family. The family has four generations of experience in Rioja Alavesa, which is often considered the Côte d'Or of the Rioja region. After a long involvement with the famous Viñedos del Contino, the family decided to go their own way in 2013. In 2016, they bottled their first own wines.
The Selvanevada offers an excellent introduction to Villota's refined red Riojas. Carmen and her team harvest the Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, and Mazuelo in small crates in Villota's beautiful old vineyards in a bend of the Ebro River. The grapes are selected for quality immediately in the vineyard.
Particularly noteworthy is the relatively large proportion of the quality Graciano grape in the blend. This provides an energetic, juicy, and spicy character. Once in the cellar, the grapes are crushed, followed by skin maceration. Subsequently, the wine ferments in French oak barrels and ages for six months in the same barrels.
The result is a lively, fresh, juicy Crianza-style Rioja that is enjoyable at many occasions. Incidentally, the eye-catching label depicts the hundred-year-old holm oak on the Ebro, with two ladies from the time of the Marquis of Selvanevada. He was once the owner of the meander in the river where Villota is now located, but due to gambling debts, he had to sell his estate. A wine with a story, then, and extremely delicious too!
Drinks with
Classic Crianza-style Rioja with beautifully balanced oak aging. Perfect for enjoying on its own, or serving with spiced grilled (meat) dishes.
Tasting note
Ruby red wine with a purple hue and a refined aroma of redcurrant, cherry, plum, bay leaf, and cedarwood. The taste is full and juicy with firm, round tannins and a lovely freshness. Good flavor concentration with dark fruit and a medium-long finish with pepper and toast.
Shelf life
Ready to drink soon after bottling; keeps for approximately 7-8 years after the harvest.
