Description
This delightful, expressive Riesling from Franz Wehrheim is light-hearted and uplifting, without detracting in the least from the substance.
Franz harvests the grapes for his Rotstück Riesling in a biodynamically farmed vineyard around the Hohenberg in Birkweiler. The vineyard is characterized by the rare Rotliegendes soil – rare for the Palatinate. This iron-rich, sandy soil consists primarily of weathered red slate – hence the cuvée's name, Rotstück.
The vineyard is ideally suited for Riesling, as this grape expresses its terroir well. Because the soil is poor, the roots have to dig deep, and the grapes remain small. This concentrates the aromas.
When the Riesling grapes are fully ripe, Franz harvests them by hand. Once in the cellar, they are destemmed and subjected to a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve as much of the pure fruit aromas as possible.
And Franz has undoubtedly succeeded. The fragrant Rotstück is refreshingly fresh and has only 11.5% alcohol, yet impresses with its ripe fruit, smokiness, and remarkable length. A pleasurable wine with substance, to be enjoyed both on its own and at the table.
