A delicious Monastrell
A smooth Spanish red wine. Bright red in color; aromatic in aroma with notes of fresh herbs and vanilla. The flavor structure is round and soft on the start, with a mild, fresh acidity in the finish. Excellent with charcuterie, but also with spicy grilled sausages, for example.
Bodegas for your home
Love ripe, sultry, and intense red wines? Then be sure to try this unique and seductive La Orphica from the equally unique Spanish Bodegas Trenza.
This estate isn't just any winery; it's the childhood dream come true for Danish brothers David and Jonas Tofterup. David already had a long career in winemaking when he started his own winery in Yecla in 2004. He brought his ten-year-younger but equally ambitious brother, Jonas, along with him, who became the first Danish Master of Wine in 2019.
Together, the brothers are now creating a small collection of wines that demonstrate Yecla's immense potential. This La Orphica is a Monastrell Selección Tardia, or a late-harvest Monastrell. This grape (also known as mourvèdre) is the signature grape of Yecla, producing dark-colored, powerful, and intense red wines.
Because David harvests his Monastrell three weeks later than usual (the grapes dry slightly on the vine), the tannins in the wine are beautifully ripe. This gives it a remarkably soft and supple structure. Besides the seductive jammy fruit, the naturally fresh acidity provides ample juiciness and balance. A wonderfully sultry wine, in short, and at least as irresistible as the mythical sounds of Orpheus's lyre.
