A delicious Monastrell
Smooth Spanish red wine. Bright red in color; aromatic on the nose with nuances of fresh herbs and vanilla. The taste structure is round and soft on the palate with a mild, fresh acidity in the finish. Excellent with charcuterie, but also with spiced grilled sausages, for example.
Bodegas for your home
A lover of ripe, sultry, and intense red wines? Then be sure to taste this special and seductive La Orphica from the equally special Spanish Bodegas Trenza.
This house is not just any wine estate; it is the realized boyhood dream of Danish brothers David and Jonas Tofterup. David already had a long career in wine behind him when he started his own winery in Yecla in 2004. He asked his brother Jonas, ten years his junior but just as ambitious, to join him; Jonas became the first Danish Master of Wine in 2019.
Together, the brothers now produce a small collection of wines that prove the great potential of Yecla. This La Orphica is a Monastrell Selección Tardia, or a late-harvested Monastrell. This grape (also known as Mourvèdre) is the quintessential grape of Yecla and yields dark-colored, powerful, and intense red wines.
Because David harvests his Monastrell three weeks later than usual (the grapes dry slightly on the vine), the tannins in the wine are beautifully ripe. As a result, the structure is remarkably soft and supple. Alongside the seductive jammy fruit, the natural fresh acidity provides ample juiciness and balance. A delicious, sultry wine, in short, and at least as irresistible as the mythical sounds of Orpheus' lyre.
