Domaine la Bouïssière, run by brothers Thierry and Gilles Faravel, is one of the top estates in Gigondas. Besides impressive, powerful wines from this Rhône cru and from neighboring Vacqueyras, the brothers also make this smooth and accessible Les Amis. From slightly less prestigious vineyards, admittedly, but with the same care and attention as their luxury cuvées.

Les Amis is a unique blend of local Syrah and Grenache with a touch of Merlot, a rare variety in these parts. Gilles pays close attention to the vineyards, which are farmed organically—though not certified. Gilles and Thierry keep yields low to ensure a beautiful concentration of flavors.

After manual harvesting, the grapes are partially destemmed, and some are fermented whole bunches. This is a key priority for winemaker Thierry, who notes that the co-fermentation of the stems results in a beautiful freshness and tension in the wine. After aging in concrete vats, which allows the wine to retain its pure, fruity character, Les Amis is bottled without filtering or fining.

It produces a classic and exceptionally delicious "vin de table": juicy, smooth, and accessible, yet with a touch more body and structure than a "vin de soif." Les Amis doesn't require aging, though it certainly keeps well. Enjoy it with or without a table, but definitely in good company. After all, it's all in the name.
