Description
Over the years, Johannes and Christoph Thörle have developed into true Burgundy specialists. They excel in making wines from Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, and even Chardonnay. The brothers prove they are on par with Burgundy producers with this magnificent Premier Cru Kalk & Kreide.
The wine is made from Chardonnay and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The grapes are sourced from Erste Lage vineyards in Saulheim with chalky soils—hence the wine's name. The brothers hand-harvest the grapes in multiple harvests to ensure optimal ripeness.
In the cellar, a classic Burgundian process follows. After a short maceration on the skins for extra aromatic intensity, the grapes ferment spontaneously. The wine then matures for about ten months with the yeasts, which are stirred once a month (bâtonnage) for extra volume and creaminess. Finally, the wine matures until bottling in French and German oak barrels, 30% of which are new.
The brothers have thus created an impressive white wine that rivals many Burgundies – even more so at this price point. The Kalk & Kreide is rich, complex, and oaky, yet equally fresh and refined. Beautiful, now and for years to come!
Drinking at
An impressive, complex white wine to enjoy with refined dishes such as pasta or paella with shellfish, grilled sole with lima beans, or fish curry.
Tasting note
A particularly refined white wine with a delicate aroma of candied lemon, lime, apple, vanilla, and flint. Intensely juicy yet vibrantly fresh with pure fruit flavors. The finish broadens with chalky-dry nuances.
