| Refined and creamy, with beautiful oak and great length |
Description
Over the years, Johannes and Christoph Thörle have developed into true Burgundy specialists. They excel in making wines from Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, and even Chardonnay. The brothers prove that they are in no way inferior to Burgundy producers with this magnificent Premier Cru, Kalk & Kreide.
The wine is made from Chardonnay and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The grapes come from Erste Lage vineyards in Saulheim with calcareous soils – hence the name of the wine. The brothers harvest the grapes by hand in multiple picking sessions to guarantee optimal ripeness.
In the cellar, a classic Burgundian method is followed. After a short skin maceration for extra aroma intensity, the grapes ferment spontaneously. Subsequently, the wine ages for about ten months with the lees, which are stirred once a month (bâtonnage) for extra body and creaminess. Finally, the wine ages until bottling in wooden barrels of French and German oak, 30% of which are new.
In this way, the brothers manage to create an impressive white wine that rivals many a Burgundy – all the more so at this price level. The Kalk & Kreide is rich, complex, and oak-driven, yet equally fresh and refined. Beautiful, now and for years to come!
Drinks with
Impressive, complex white wine to drink with refined dishes, such as pasta or paella with shellfish, grilled sole with lima beans, or fish curry.
Tasting note
Particularly refined white wine with a delicate aroma of candied lemon, lime, apple, vanilla, and flint. Intensely juicy yet lively and fresh, with pure fruit on the palate. The finish spreads out broadly with chalky-dry nuances.
