Description

Assyrtiko is the grape from the volcanic Greek island of Santorini. Here this grape gives unique, bone-dry white wines, with fresh acidity and salty notes. In the hands of Greece's best winemakers – including Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and Leon Karatsalos of Gaia – Assyrtiko of Santorini is enormously complex, with impressive intensity and length and aging potential.

Unfortunately, less and less assyrtiko is planted on Santorini. Due to increasing tourism, more and more vineyards are being cleared to make way for apartments. This makes Assyrtiko of Santorini more scarce and expensive.

It is logical that the gentlemen of Gaia took the grape from Santorini to Nemea to make beautiful dry white wine in their second winery. Here the sticks do not grow in black volcanic sand on the coast, but in the calcareous soils of the hilly Peloponnese, at 600 meters above sea level.

This mainland Assyrtiko is therefore more accessible and milder than the island variants, with more tropical fruit and less saltiness. What it does have in common with Santorini colleagues, is that they are also delicious with everything fresh from the sea. Also just as an aperitif and in good company, this is a delicious glass of wine.

And the name Monograph? It is not only English, but also very Greek: monos is Greek for single, graphein means writing. Just as a monograph is an in-depth study of a specific subject, Gaia has thoroughly experimented with the Assyrtiko grape. The result speaks for itself: modern, simple and seductively delicious.
