Besides the numerous DOC (Denominazione de Origine Controllata) designations of origin, Italy boasts many regional wines. This IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) class offers winemakers a wider selection of grape varieties. Terre di Chieti is actually located in Abruzzo. Only the Montepulciano grape may be used for red DOC wines. They often have a somewhat tannic and rustic flavor. However, the IGT Madregale is also made largely from the Sangiovese grape, which provides greater smoothness and freshness.
