Tasting note Mourgues du Gres
Full dry white wine from southern France. Full color, powerful aroma with nuances from ripe to overripe yellow fruit and honey. The taste is full, round and persistent, with mild acids and a long, aromatic finish. Ready to drink from at least 1 year after harvest, easy to keep for 3 to 4 years.
François and Anne Collard from domaine Mourgues du Grès make their wines in Costières de Nîmes, between the Rhône and the Camargue. The grapes for their Terre d'Argence line come from vineyards with old canes, which ensures richness and concentration. The name Terre d'Argence refers to that, as well as to the silver sheen of the rustling leaves of the olive trees in the vineyard.
The blend for the white Terre d'Argence is special: it is a combination of Rhôned grapes viognier and rousanne and the aromatic Sud-Ouest grape petit manseng. Because the latter grape is not allowed in the AOC Costières de Nimes, the wine is 'declassified' into IGP Pont du Gard. However, a lesser wine is anything but!
Because the sticks are old, the yields are low and the grapes therefore have a very concentrated taste. After fermentation, where no sulphite is used, the wine matures for another year, a third part in wooden barrels. It gives a rich, rich white wine, with ripe fruit, round door and minerality. Drink it preferably with meals, from poultry and white meat to curries and spicy cheeses.
