| By Adam Mason, former winemaker at DeMorgenzon | |
| Fresh and creamy, with notes of stone fruit, brioche, and toast |
Description
Adam Mason, whom you may remember as the former winemaker of DeMorgenzon, also has his own wine label in South Africa: Yardstick Wines. Under this label, Adam produces high-quality, small-scale wines. He focuses on promising terroirs in Stellenbosch.
He makes this refined Chardonnay from the high-quality Burgundy clone CY95. The grapes are planted in a southwest-facing hillside vineyard at the foot of the Stellenboschberg, about thirteen kilometers from False Bay. The vineyards therefore benefit from abundant sunshine as well as cooling air currents from the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
These conditions yield grapes of magnificent quality, with intense fruit aromas and beautiful fresh acidity. After picking and pressing, Adam ferments the juice two-thirds in stainless steel tanks and one-third in used oak barrels. After aging with the lees for about nine months, he blends the wines and bottles the final result after light filtering and clarification. The yield is limited to just 5,000 bottles.
The Yardstick Chardonnay is both distinctive and delightfully drinkable. It has a seductive aroma, with notes of ripe yellow fruit, butter, brioche, and toast. The taste is full, juicy, and creamy, with an invigorating freshness. And all that for less than fifteen euros. Very fine!
Drinks with
Beautiful, creamy dry white wine to drink on its own or with flavourful (fish) dishes. Lovely with a seafood salad, noodles with fried salmon and mango, or pumpkin ravioli.
Tasting note
Lemon-yellow wine with a refined aroma of melon, peach, lemon, and brioche. The taste is full and juicy with ripe yellow fruit and an invigorating freshness. Lingering finish with nuances of butter and toast.
