The grapes (80% grenache, 18% syrah and 2% mourvèdre) from the 30 to 40 year old vines give the wine candied fruit, spiciness and pepper in the nose. The taste is full and firm and is supported by soft tannins. The wine has a beautiful structure and a full, long-lasting taste.
The Domaine de Cassan was founded in 1929 by an industrialist from Lyon. The estate was bought by Paul Croset in 1974 and today it is managed by his sons Jean-Charles and Vincent. It 27 ha. large domain (7.5 ha Gigondas, 16.5 ha Beaumes de Venise and 3 ha Côtes de Ventoux) is very idyllically located in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, 35 km north of Avignon and 15 km. west of Orange in the department of Vaucluse.
The vineyards on the slopes, which are between 6 and 40 years old, are mainly located between Lafare, Beaumes de Venise and Gigondas. The soil is very poor and consists of loam, lime and marl and is covered with boulders. The grapes planted are grenache (65%), syrah (20%), mourvèdre (10%) and cinsault (5%). The harvest is done by hand and chemical agents are avoided as much as possible (“la culture raisonnée”). A temperature-controlled fermentation follows after destemination. Then the wine is crossed on large oak casks.
