Syrah meets Monastrell
Spanish red wine with a spicy and fruity aroma and a touch of oak. Good to combine with richer stews or roast beef.
A delicious Piqueras
There are still real discoveries to be made in lesser known wine regions. Trouvailles that positively surprise us in comparative tastings. An example is the Bodegas Piqueras from the small wine region of Almansa, located between the large wine region of La Mancha and the coast near Denia in southeastern Spain.
On the 110-hectare Finca Los Timonares, director and oenologist Juan Pablo Bonete makes a special wine from monastrell and syrah grape varieties that fit perfectly with the dry climate. This ensures a naturally low yield in the vineyards in this part of Spain.
An additional advantage is that in 2011 Juan Pablo was able to switch to organic grape cultivation quite easily. This translates into a concentrated wine that matures for about four months in casks of American and French Alliereiken. In the selection tasting, the wine was especially notable for its ripe soft and modern style. Is this monastrell syrah your new house wine?
