A delicious Piqueras

In lesser-known wine regions, there are still real discoveries to be made. Finds that pleasantly surprise us in comparative tastings. One example is Bodegas Piqueras from the small wine region of Almansa, located between the large La Mancha wine region and the coast near Denia in southeastern Spain.

At the 110-hectare Finca Los Timonares, director and oenologist Juan Pablo Bonete makes a special wine from Monastrell and Syrah grape varieties that are perfectly suited to the dry climate. This naturally results in low yields in the vineyards in this part of Spain.

An added benefit is that Juan Pablo was able to transition to organic grape cultivation relatively easily in 2011. This results in a concentrated wine that matures for about four months in American and French Allier oak barrels. In the selection tasting, the wine stood out particularly for its ripe, soft, and modern style. Is this Monastrell Syrah your new house wine?
