Tasting note Tenuta de Angelis Marche Quinto Rosso

A juicy red wine with aromas of red fruit and spicy herbs. The palate is smooth, aromatic, fresh, and accessible. A delicious wine for everyday use, perhaps with lightly spiced snacks, but also perfect for enjoying outside of meals.

Description

The family-run Tenuta de Angelis has been known for years for its delicious red and white wines, such as Rosso Piceno Superiore Offida and Falerio. Owner Quinto Fausti prefers traditional wines that, he says, pair well with food. A sentiment shared by many (older) Italian winemakers. But since his son Alighiero joined the company, the style has been changing. For the better, we think.

Alighiero recognizes that many of his non-Italian clients primarily drink red wine outside of meals, requiring a tailored vinification process. While tasting and consulting with Alighiero and Quinto, we also discovered that part of their production isn't bottled but intended for sale to merchants in Tuscany and Veneto. A small tank of mature, round red wine was a particularly positive surprise.

It turned out to be a Montepulciano made by Alighiero from his organic vineyard in Offida, aged for three months in oak barrels. Just what we were looking for! This full-bodied, powerful, and smooth red regional wine also tastes excellent outside of a meal. The Quinto Rosso has now been bottled, and Alighiero named this special blend—with a wink—after his father.
