From pioneer Juan Antonio Ponce
Mineral, elegant and richly variegated
Delicious with veal or poultry
As rustic as the image of Manchuela's obscure wine region, Juan Antonio's wine is refined and elegant. He is therefore not the first winemaker. He graduated as an oenologist at a young age, before gaining experience as the right-hand man of the famous Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodiguez. He also immersed himself in biodynamics and the fin nature movement.

Juan Antonio's undisputed specialty is the unruly bobald grape, but he also makes superb wines from other local grapes such as albilla, moravia agria and garnacha. He does this in a natural way: Juan Antonio harvests by hand, ferments with grape yeasts, awakens with low doses of sulphite and does not filter or clarify his wines.

This amazing La Xara is a pure Garnacha. The grapes come from a ten hectare, forty year old vineyard. The sticks stand on a soil of clay, lime and granite and are not irrigated. Juan Antonio picks the grapes relatively early so he can create an elegant garnacha style, with juicy fruit and fresh acidity.

Once harvested and fermented, the wine is aged for seven months in French oak barrels. It produces a special, richly variegated red wine, with an unmistakably Mediterranean, but at the same time almost un-Spanish refined character. La Xara is delicate, minerally and terroir-typed, with pure, juicy fruit and notes of pepper and laurel. A unique wine, well worth exploring!
Drink at
Elegant, slightly spicy red wine to drink on its own, or to combine with pasta salad, veal rolls with garlic and sage or young, hard cheeses.
Tasting note
Light ruby red wine with a pure and refined fragrance expression of red cherry, wild strawberry, laurel and mint. The palate is light and finesse with ripe red fruit, an uplifting freshness and fine, polished tannins. The aftertaste fans out nicely with nuances of pepper and toast.
Shelf life
Ready to drink now and can be stored for 5 to 6 years after harvest.
