There is a new style of vinho verde, which is currently being bought by alert sommeliers and of a completely different level than the slightly sweet and slightly sparkling wines you may know from a holiday in Portugal. The new style is dry, full of ripe fruit and an attractive freshness, which combines extremely well with dishes. A small group of producers, including the legendary Anselmo Mendes, are causing the quality revolution this area needs. There is life after sauvignon blanc! That comment made an English wine writer who was delighted with the Cazas Novas vinho verde. We found this beautiful wine at the small producer Cazas Novas who works about thirty hectares of their own vineyard in the Baião sub-region, the warmest and driest part of this usually cool and wet northern Portuguese region, giving the wines a ripe and mouth-filling taste, despite while retaining the characteristic, fresh and mineral properties. Vinho Verde legend Anselmo Mendes is associated with Cazas Novas as a winemaker and, together with Diogo Lopes, ensures impeccable quality with a clear Mendes signature. The pure Alvarinho comes from the more northerly vineyards of Anselmo Mendes in Monção Melgaço and shows the enormous quality potential of Northern Portugal. Intense, clean and fresh scents paired with a long, lingering taste.
