The new sparkling wine from Spain
Refined mousse, complex aroma with nuances of toast, ripe pineapple, and ripe floral notes. The taste is dry, elegant, and with a long, persistent, and aromatic finish.
Xarel-lo and Macabeo grape
The Josep Coca Brut Nature is the prestige sparkling wine from the artisanal Sabaté i Coca estate, based in Penedès. The family has owned vineyards in the region for four generations and has earned a great reputation for their terroir-driven sparkling wines of outstanding quality.
The grapes for this top wine come from just four of the total 66 plots the estate comprises. These plots were originally planted by Josep Coca, the maternal grandfather of winemaker Marcel Sabaté.
The Xarel-lo and Macabeo are harvested by hand and vinified separately. The base wines are then blended and bottled for a second fermentation in the bottle – as is customary in Champagne. Once fermented, the wine ages for a further four years in the bottle, giving it an impressively rich and complex character.
The result can easily be compared to a Vintage Champagne: refined, layered, and with a wonderful balance between freshness and ripeness. Given its pronounced character and robust body, the Josep Coca is an excellent food wine.
Striking detail: the signature on the label reads José Coca, not Josep. Under Franco's rule, Catalan names were not permitted, so the Spanish variants had to be used.
