São Miguel Alentejo Escolha dos Enologos

Deep red in color; refined and powerful in aroma with notes of ripe blackberries, toasted oak, and vanilla. The full flavor is balanced, rich, and aromatic; the finish has mild, soft tannins and a lingering aroma.

Red wine from Alentejo

Alexandre Relvas and his collaborator Nuno Franco, both oenologists, independently select each year what they consider the very best barrels of wine from the indigenous grapes Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Franca, and Touriga Nacional. They then create a special blend from this selection, incorporating as many of the preferred characteristics of both winemakers as possible. This impressive red Alentejo comes from vineyards on slate-clay soils. These vineyards almost automatically produce low yields and therefore concentrated grapes. After harvesting, the grapes ferment in temperature-controlled open vats, known as lagares. The second malolactic fermentation and aging last nine months in 400-liter French oak barrels. The result is a deeply colored, powerful red wine with an impressive aroma of ripe fruit and balanced oak. The wine is structured, but not heavy or ponderous, and finishes with a long, smooth finish. A crowd-pleaser!
