Villota Tinto

Low yield vineyards of more than 40 years old, selected in different places of our own Villota estate, on the Ebro River in Laserna (Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa). The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barrels with an extra fine grain and then for a number of months in concrete tanks.

Pure and intense, with an attractive color. Mineral and spicy aromas. Notes of licorice, caramel, chocolate. A very complex spicy touch. The red fruit stands out, with notes of balsamic and forest wood. Fresh and balanced mouth. Intensity and great perseverance. Soft tannins, integrated wood. Great aging potential.

We've got him! After many tasting sessions, we selected a Rioja producer that suits us perfectly and fits well with the Vivanco and Tierras de Murillo range.

It is the small-scale bodega Viña del Lentisco of the Villota family that markets the wines under their own name. Total production is currently 40,000 bottles.

The history is special. Vineyards have been family owned since 1930. In 1973, Ricardo Pérez Villota took the initiative with CVNE to establish Viñedos Contino based on his vineyards. He was director for many years, but decided in 2013 to sell his share and break away from CVNE. The family starts a new bodega with top quality, old vineyards next to those of Contino, right on the River Ebro in Rioja Alavesa, just in the Basque Country. The vineyards are cultivated without pesticides and herbicides. The first wine will be on the market in 2016.

The bodega was recommended to us as a 'secret tip' by various Spanish contacts and we were very impressed by the purity and expression of the wines. In short: first-class fruit with super nice tannins due to perfect peel ripeness. Made modern with an oak influence of great (French) class. Immediately seductive as soon as the bottle is open with an impressive length. We don't often come across this quality!
