A deep red wine with a restrained aroma of ripe black fruit and lightly roasted notes. The flavor structure is full, spicy, and with a lingering finish.
Description
Dom Rafael is the most accessible red wine from Mouchão, one of the great classics of the Portuguese wine world. A 38-hectare winery, owned by the Reynolds family since 1901, where time has stood still and electricity was only connected in 1991. Here, wine is made without haste, just as it was in the old days. The hand-harvested grapes (Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, and Trincadeira) are brought to the cellar in 20-kilo bins and pressed by foot in lagares, large open fermentation tanks, before being slowly fermented. After fermentation, the wine spends 12 months in barrels of various sizes (225, 2500, and 5000 liters). This is a beautiful, classically made Portuguese wine, very distinctive from the modern school.
