Tasting note Le Clos du Caillou Garrigues

Bright red French wine with a spicy aroma of fresh red fruit and a fine spiciness. The taste is juicy and smooth. Delicious with cold dishes or grilled meat.

The organic wines from Le Clos du Caillou are of an exceptional class and refinement. Bruno Gaspard and owner Sylvie Vacheron manage to bring rare elegance into the wines despite the warm Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. They make a style and quality that is seen by many as the future for this famous area. Here people have become accustomed to harvesting too ripe grenach grapes, which as a result give very alcoholic and heavy wines.

A style that is well under fire and as a whole differs from Le Bouquet des Garrigues from this domain. The vineyards of this luxury côtes du rhône lie against Châteauneuf-du-Pape, only separated by the Route Nationale. The plantation is dominated by mainly 50-year-old grenache vines, with an additional 15% syrah, 10% carignan and 10% mourvèdre. The yield is very low at an average of 25 hectoliters per hectare.

The harvest is done manually with a first selection in the vineyard, followed by a second upon entering the cellar. Bruno Gaspard selects only the very best grapes for Le Bouquet des Garrigues and lets them ferment in concrete tubs. The maturation takes place in large oak barrels for 15 months. The result is a frequently acclaimed côtes du rhône that is worthy of comparison with good châteauneuf-du-pape.
