Tasting note Le Clos du Caillou Garrigues

Bright red French wine with a spicy aroma of fresh red fruit and a fine spiciness. The taste is juicy and smooth. Delicious with cold dishes or grilled meat.

The organic wines of Le Clos du Caillou are of exceptional class and refinement. Bruno Gaspard and owner Sylvie Vacheron manage to bring a rare elegance to the wines despite the warm Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir. They create a style and quality that is seen by many as the future for this famous area. Here people have become accustomed to harvesting Grenache grapes that are too ripe, which give very alcoholic and heavy wines.

A style that is under fire and is very different from Le Bouquet des Garrigues of this domain. The vineyards of this luxurious côtes du rhône are situated against Châteauneuf-du-Pape, separated only by the Route Nationale. The planting is dominated by mainly 50 year old Grenache vines, with an additional 15% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Mourvèdre. With an average of 25 hectoliters per hectare, the yield is very low.

The harvest is done manually with a first selection in the vineyard, followed by a second on entering the cellar. Bruno Gaspard selects only the very best grapes for Le Bouquet des Garrigues and lets them ferment in concrete vats. The aging takes place for 15 months in large oak barrels. The result is a much-acclaimed côtes du rhône worthy of comparison with good châteauneuf-du-pape.
