Villota Tinto
This wine comes from the "Cepas Madre" plot, the estate's oldest, planted in 1930. The vines are specially selected and therefore of high quality, with a low yield. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels and then in concrete tanks.
Bright, intense color. Floral nose and aromas of ripe fruit (cherries, red plums) interwoven with subtle pastry notes. Fruity, fleshy, and a pleasant mouthfeel. Balanced tannin structure and lovely acidity. Fresh, with balsamic nuances. Structured and very well-integrated oak. Balanced, clean, and fine, with great persistence.
Wine of Lentisco
We've got it! After many tasting sessions, we selected a Rioja producer that's a perfect fit for us and complements the Vivanco and Tierras de Murillo ranges.
The small-scale winery Viña del Lentisco, owned by the Villota family, markets the wines under their own name. Currently, total production stands at 40,000 bottles.
The history is remarkable. Since 1930, the vineyards have been family-owned. In 1973, Ricardo Pérez Villota, along with CVNE, took the initiative to establish Viñedos Contino based on his vineyards. He served as director for many years but decided to sell his share in 2013 and separate from CVNE. The family is starting a new bodega with top quality, old vineyards located next to those of Contino, right on the Ebro River in Rioja Alavesa, just in the Basque Country. The vineyards are cultivated without pesticides or herbicides. The first wine will be released in 2016.
The winery was recommended to us as an "inside secret" by several Spanish contacts, and we were very impressed with the purity and expression of the wines. In short: first-class fruit with superb tannins thanks to perfect skin ripeness. Modernized with a high-class (French) oak influence. Instantly seductive from the moment the bottle is opened, with an impressive length. We don't often encounter this quality!
