Burgundy Chardonnay
A rich yellow color and a beautiful, complex aroma of overripe yellow fruit, butter, and hints of caramel. The palate has a powerful, fresh start and develops well-balancedly. The finish is long and aromatic, again with ripe yellow fruit and toasted nuances.
Saint Véran & Pouilly Fuisse
Jacques and Nathalie Saumaize produce exquisite white Burgundy wines in the renowned appellations of Pouilly-Fuissé and Saint-Véran. Their 13 hectares of vineyards are situated on the slopes of the impressive Vergisson rock, which dominates the southern part of Burgundy.
They've been farming organically for years, but their thirty-year-old son, Anthony, is taking things further. Since 2018, at his initiative, the family has been practicing biodynamics. This means even more meticulous attention to the vineyards and cellars—precisely the strength of small-scale wine production.
Specialist Saumaize, while logically unable to compete with many larger wineries on price, far outstrips them in quality. Moreover, the lack of overhead and marketing costs (which they spend virtually nothing on) mitigates the difference in production costs. The high quality is evident in the ever-limited, exquisite white Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche.
This Pouilly comes from a small plot with very chalky soil. The Chardonnay vines are 50 years old. It produces a beautiful white Burgundy with lovely, complex aromas and a powerful, yet refined, and lingering flavor. Sur la Roche will receive Premier Cru status with the 2020 harvest. A well-deserved recognition for this top-tier terroir.
Awards
Mention
Jancis Robinson - January 2020: 16/20 points | Attractive style
Description
Very chalk-led nose, oodles of acidity and ripe opulent sweet fruit too, just a hint of tinned pineapple. Nicely put together and attractive style.
Mention
Tim Atkin MW - Special Report 2018 Burgundy: 92/100 points
Mention
The Wine Advocate - August 2019: 92/100 points | Ripe acids, good depth and tension
Description
Bursting from the glass with aromas of orange zest, citrus blossom, beeswax and warm bread, the 2017 Pouilly-Fuissé Sur La Roche is medium to full-bodied, deep and muscular, with ripe acids, good depth and tension at the core and persuasive grip on the finish that suggests it will reward at least a few year's bottle age.
