Tasting note Herdade do Mouchão Alentejo Tinto
Intense red wine with a beautiful aroma of fine herbs, matured red fruit and oak. The flavor structure is full, powerful and balanced; the finish long, complex and persistent.
Mouchaõ is one of the great classics in the Portuguese wine world. A wine estate of 38 hectares, owned by the Reynolds family since 1901, where time stood still and only in 1991 was connected to electricity. Here wine is made without haste, as before. The hand-picked grapes are still kept in lagares, large open fermenters, pressed with their feet and then slowly fermented. The top wine Mouchão has international recognition as one of the very best Portuguese wines and is made of mainly alicante bouschet (70%) and trincadeira. After fermentation Mouchão matures between 24 and 36 months in large wooden barrels, depending on the quality of the harvest. This is an impressive red wine that comes into its own when you pour the wine well before pouring, aerated in a decanter. Mouchão advises to serve the wine at about 17ºC.
