It seems as if everything Jean Paul Brun touches turns to gold. Terres Dorées' extremely dedicated winemaker has an established reputation for its Burgundy-made red and white Beaujolais. This beautiful, subtle Saint-Amour is no exception.
Saint-Amour is the most northerly cru in the region. The gamay grapes come from about 50 year old sticks. They are planted on a granite soil, which gives the final wine a special character.
After the manual harvest, the grapes are again thoroughly sorted and destemmed. Brun then ferments the gamay using the natural yeasts present on the skins of the grape. Finally, in order to preserve the intense, pure fruit character, the wine does not mature in wooden, but concrete barrels.
The end result is astonishing. The scent alone: an intense perfume of fresh red fruit, complemented by floral, earthy and peppery notes. And then the taste: super-pure fruit, a gossamer-fine yet powerful structure, lively fresh acidity and a complex, long finish. We cannot say otherwise: it is love at first sight with this Saint-Amour.
