|From renowned Brunello producer Castello Romitorio|
|Powerful, wood-aged blend of syrah and petit verdot|
|The perfect wine for a nice steak|
Petit Verdot & Syrah blend
Deep ruby red wine with a complex aroma of ripe red fruit (cherry, plum) supplemented with spices (black pepper, vanilla). The taste is full and pronounced with a nice balance between sultry ripe fruit, crispness and a powerful structure. The finish is intense and long.
Il Toro Tuscany
It has now been proven that, in addition to sangiovese, French grapes also perform excellently in Tuscany. Most famous for its wines from French grape varieties is the coastal region of Bolgheri. But also Filippo Chia of the famous Brunello house Castello Romitorio makes a heaven-storming Super Tuscan.
Chia does not do this in Montalcino, where he makes his acclaimed Brunellos, but in Scansano, where Romitorio owns a second domain. Not far from an Etruscan settlement and a stone's throw from the coast, he grows syrah and petit verdot as well as sangiovese.
Once perfectly ripe, Chia harvests the grapes by hand. Before and after destemming, the grapes are also manually checked, so that only the best fruit ends up in the wine. After fermentation, the wine is aged for another year in oak barrels.
The end result is simply stunning: the pepperiness and intense cherry fruit of the syrah combine beautifully with the aroma, texture and blackberry fruit of the petit verdot. A powerful, muscular and luxurious red wine, which also has the unmistakable Tuscan elegance. Drink this Toro with a nice steak and the party is complete!
Vinous - June 2020: 92/100 points | Already rocking, yet a few years of cellaring should reveal even further depths
The 2018 Romitorio Toscana is fresh and lifted on the nose - unexpectedly so, showing smoky cherry and citrus-tinged blackberry with savory herbs. On the palate, silky textures contrast spicy raspberry fruit, as saline-minerals and zesty acids add grip under an air of inner violet florals. The finish is long, showing saturating red berry tones and hints of youthful tannin. This blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot is already rocking, yet a few years of cellaring should reveal even further depths.
The Wine Advocate - January 2020: 93 +/- 100 points | RomiTòro is one of the great value wines to emerge from Tuscany
The previous vintage of this wine carried the name Il Toro, but the wine has been renamed with this vintage. In archaic Italian, the name RomiTorò translates as Romitorio. The Castello Romitorio 2018 RomiTòro is made with equal parts Syrah and Petit Verdot, all aged in oak for 10 months. This edition opens to an inky dark appearance followed by a thick and succulent texture. It offers a certain firmness to the tannins and a thinner spot on the mid-palate that thickens quickly as the wine hits the palate. Dark plum, prune and blackberry emerge at the top. Lighter notes of spice, smoke and tar also appear. Pair this wine with your favorite steak dinner. Some 44,437 bottles were made. The wine was bottled in December 2019 and hits the market in February 2020. RomiTòro is one of the great value wines to emerge from Tuscany.
The Wine Advocate - July 2019: 95/100 points | A bold and expressive wine
A blend of Petit Verdot and Syrah, the 2016 Il Toro is a muscular animal that boldly exposes dark fruit, blackberry preserves, dried cherry, spice, leather and spicy cedar. The blend is unique because it pairs the volume and spicy intensity of Syrah with the density, darkness and structure of Petit Verdot. Softer aromas of sweet fruit cede quickly to tar, grilled herb and rich plum. Pair this wine with grilled T-bone steak. This is a bold and expressive wine that opens a new chapter for Filippo Chia and his talented team.
